Simply telling someone not to feel a certain way will never have the desired result. Instead, ask questions about their feelings. Acknowledge and understand without trying to change.
Ways to acknowledge:
- That sounds really heavy.
- Would you like to talk about it?
- I want to help. Can I bring you dinner on Thursday?
- This sucks.
Ways to minimize:
- Look on the bright side.
- When my cat died/when I got divorced…
- It isn’t all that bad.
- What is this experience trying to teach you?
Be cognizant of all of these things.
