Adrian’s Elephant and Peanut’s feet (Sarah Perry Photography)

Your sister is beautiful, my love. She lays her tiny head on my chest and I am broken. I remember when they I gave her to me and she was screaming and all I could think was, “Yes, mama loves you so much. You are a new piece of my everything.”

And suddenly I’m just bigger and you are still gone and I’m straddling the world in two.

She’s here, she’s here, she’s here. And I love her, and I love and miss you.

Penelope Rayne* was born in the early hours of the morning of May 15th. We were induced early because I was starting to show signs of preeclampsia and HELLP. We were induced early, like I should have been with you.

Memories are heavy. I love you.
