Esquimalt Lagoon, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada (Miranda Hernandez)I was sitting in the couch, wrapped in a towel. I had just gotten out of the shower. I wasn’t hungry, but I thought I should eat. Your Aunt Alexis* was going to make me spaghetti. I thought I would need the energy. We were talking about sauce when my water broke.
I think I was still pretty numb at that point. When I think about it now, I am angry. If I had gone into labor just 24 hours prior, you would be here today. How did my body get it backwards?
I felt the water rushing out of me. I noticed with such a detached feeling that it was almost like peeing, except I had no control. Then I looked down, and saw that it was all blood. My first thought was this was proof something was wrong with me. My second was that maybe I was dying.
I kind of woke up then. I had the paper from the hospital, with the number they had given me to call when I was ready to come in. They seemed calm, but told me to come now. Your Aunt had grabbed some towels and we made a crude diaper to wear as I waddled to the car. I was finally in labor.
