I didn’t have a guest book at Adrian’s funeral. I wish I had thought of it. The space serves that purpose for everyone touched by Adrian’s life.

Adrian,
I had the great privilege and honor of watching your life transform the life of your mother, Miranda. From Miranda’s eager anticipation discussing the need for time off to get ready for your birth to her great joy in seeing your ultrasound pictures and to her immeasurable sadness after you passed on, Miranda has become forever a better person through her life with you. After your birth, she wasn’t the same person she was a year earlier, and she definitely isn’t the same person today, a year since.
Even today, I am still shocked by your tragic early loss and I know that life can seem senseless and without meaning so many times in our lives. However, I also only know that all lives, no matter how short, can create an infinite chain of positive impacts on those around us and those we don’t even know, and that was definitely the case with you. I will forever remember your mother’s words at your ceremony saying that she had planned for everything, but not for losing you. Her words made me recall some of our lengthy leadership discussions, and how I was incapable of teaching her one of the hardest lessons of being a parent and a leader, which can probably only be realized through experience. It’s that no matter how smart we become, how well we plan, and how many resources we have, the things we value the most … our children … our people … are the things we can never fully protect. So, the best we can ever do is to value every moment we have with them and to constantly remind ourselves that they are what truly matters most.
Adrian, I know that God gave the great gift of you to Miranda, and although your time with her was short, the chain of positive impacts of your life will never end. I’m sorry I never had the chance to meet you, but I thank you for helping your mom, Miranda, to grow and learn and to transform so many lives for the better, the way you transformed hers.
Miranda, thank you for continuing to honor Adrian through your endless positive impacts on those around you and those you still have yet to meet. And even if those individuals never know Adrian personally, he will always be a part of the positive impacts you make.
